The petty tyrant in your life banks on your having something to lose in the given situation of tyranny. Why? Because his entire life is built around gain and loss, gain being positive for him and loss being devastating. He cannot fathom another person who does not operate on the same basis, but rather operates to please God and not man. So, when a holy person comes on the scene with nothing in life to lose in regard to the approval of others, this attitude simply does not compute with the tyrant, who is found in every walk of life—yes, even church.
O Lord, remember not only the men and women of good will, but also those of ill will. But do not remember all the suffering they have inflicted on us, remember the fruits we have bought, because of this suffering – our comradeship, our loyalty, our humility, our courage, our generosity, the greatness of heart that has grown out of all of this, and when they come to judgement, let all the fruits we have borne be their forgiveness.
