‘Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.’ ~ Hebrews 1.1
What is this substance and evidence? Love.
‘So faith, hope, love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.‘ ~ I Corinthians 13.13
Therefore, the substance and evidence brought forth through our faith and hope is our God himself–for God is love.
‘He who does not love does not know God; for God is love.’ ~ I John 4.8
‘…we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us.’ ~ Romans 5.3-5
When love, when God, moves freely in our lives, then all needs and desires of the heart are met. We no longer worry, we no longer long for intimacy, we no longer desire power and acceptance from others. Note that those three temptations are the three our Lord was tempted with, and are the only three we are ever tempted with, though they come at us in a variety of ways. (Matthew 4/Luke 4)
‘Cast up a highway [song] for him who rides through the deserts.’ ~ Psalm 68.4b
When we cast up our songs of praise to our God, we exercise faith and hope and make the way straight for him.
